Hi, I’m Alexis, and before 2019 I’d never listened to a podcast before.
If you just crinkled your nose up in judgment, know that I’m covering my face in shame. Not really, but that was a nice visual wasn’t it? Anywho, back to podcasts, which I can now proudly say that I listen to. Not skim through. Not skip through. Not rolling my eyes in angst every time someone mentions one. I listen to podcasts y’all!
And guess what? They’re pretty damn great. Lately, I’ve been going back and listening to older episodes of a few podcasts and I have to say that I am hooked. So, if you’re looking for a good podcast to listen to in the morning during your commute to work or hey, even at work, here are four of my favorite podcasts to listen to these days.
With a name like that, it should be easy to figure out what this podcast is all about. For my thirst-challenged folks out there, it’s all about embracing thirstiness i.e. that extra ass feeling you get every time you even think about a celeb you like and start feeling a tingle in more than one place. There’s hilarious fanfic and the hosts Bim Adewunmi and Nichole Perkins, do a fantastic job of explaining why they (and everyone else should be!) thirsting over Hollywood stars beyond the physical. I caught on late (like years late!) to the thirst train, but I was overjoyed to learn that the once-canceled Thirst Aid Kit will be returning on September 26.
Favorite Episode: “The Evolution of Michael Bae Jordan”
Every time I listen to Keep It, I can’t stop laughing. Ira Madison III and co-host Louis Virtel talk about the week’s pop culture news — i.e. Taylor Swift’s new album, whatever movie everyone’s talking about on Twitter, and Scarlett Johansson’s latest faux pas — before being joined by writers, actors, directors, and more to discuss their past and upcoming projects. If you like pop culture with a dash of politics, then this is the podcast for you.
Favorite Episode: “Neither What, Neither Who” (With Robin Thede)
Let me go ahead and put this out there: Amanda Seales is not for everybody. I repeat, Amanda Seales is not for everybody. If you don’t like hearing the honest to God truth, even when it’s uncomfortable and applies to you, skip this podcast. For those that do like engaging, complex, real conversations that have a lot of humor, fun sound effects and songs mixed in, give it a listen. There’s a wide range of topics discussed. Everything from the side effects of crushes, to ambition, to travel.
Favorite Episode: “Side Effects of Being an Oreo”
4. The Call
You know that recurring feeling you get when you think about your dreams and passions? BUT instead of taking the leap and pursuing them, you push the feeling to the side? In essence, you ignore your “call” to adventure. In The Call, former political strategist Erica Williams Simon talks with women who answered their call about the journey, the challenges and the impact of doing so. If you’re like me and actively trying to go from dreamer to doer, this is the podcast for you. Note: The last new episode dropped in 2018. I’ve been listening to past chats and am not sure if there’ll be any more.
Favorite Episode: “020: Melina Matsoukas”
